PE at St Joseph’s

We believe at St Joseph’s that all children should have the opportunity to:

  • Achieve their full potential in PE and school sport

  • Receive high quality PE and sports teaching

  • Engage in exciting and challenging but safe activities that encourage active healthy lifestyles.

St Joseph’s is an all-inclusive school which will give a child, whatever their ability, a chance to represent their school and self in a competitive competition. We are part of a long established sports association, St Benedict’s Secondary School which organises many sporting events. They encourage competition, sportsmanship and discipline in many sports including tag rugby, football, cross country, athletics and rounders. This gives us the opportunity to compete against local schools in inter- sport competitions.

Monitoring: Every term we assess how well the children have performed in their sporting skills (emerging, expected & greater depth) this show us how well the children are performing. The PE Leader then collates this information and uses that, as well as information from monitoring teachers’ plans, lessons and children’s work to ensure our provision and pupil outcomes are the very best they can be. Any next steps to move the subject and the children’s learning forward are fed into the PE Leader’s action plan, which is part of the whole school development plan.

At St Joseph's PE is a central focus. PE is integrated into the curriculum to ensure that all children, from Reception to Year 6, have the opportunity to be active, learn how to be healthy and most importantly, have fun whilst learning new skills. Have a look on our class pages to find out what we have been up to in our PE sessions.

Miss Priddle is our PE Leader at school. She works closely with our teachers, teaching assistants and coaches to ensure that the children receive a quality PE experience.

We currently have two coaches in school, Mrs Harper, who teaches us PE throughout the year and Mr Green, a semi-professional footballer, who coaches football. Throughout the year we also have other visitors who come to help train and coach our children, for example:

-Mrs Bell, who coaches gymnastics and country dance

-Cumbria Cricket, who coach KS1/2 cricket

-Whitehaven Rugby League, who coach KS2 rugby

-Russell Gainford, who coaches KS2 rugby union

Below you will find a file that contains St Joseph's competition calendar 2018-2019. Wherever possible, we always try to take as many teams as possible to all events to ensure that all children are given the opportunity to take part in a number of sporting events.
