Reading & Phonics

Phonics

The basis of our phonics teaching in school is Debble Hepplethwaite's No Nonsense Phonics Scheme. The sounds children learn may also be incorporated into provision and other teaching depending on the needs of our children.

Please see the document below about how we teach phonics. Also below is some information about the phonics screening check taken at the end of year 1. If you have any questions please feel free to speak to your child's class teacher.

Reading

We use Oxford Reading Tree as the main source of our reading scheme however we also use books from other schemes including Big cat, Songbirds and Phonics Bug. Children who are still accessing phonics will bring home a book which matches their phonic ability. Once children have progressed through the scheme and are fluent, confident readers they are then 'free readers' who can select their books from the school library or their class reading areas.
