Curriculum at St. Joseph's Catholic Primary School

At St. Joseph's Catholic Primary School,  we are committed to delivering a curriculum that aligns with our school's mission and values. As a small, rural, and community-focused Catholic primary school, we strive to provide a high-quality education that nurtures the individual talents of each child and prepares them to be confident, happy, and active citizens.

Mathematics: A Mastery Approach

In mathematics, we follow the White Rose Maths resources, which promote a mastery approach to teaching and learning. We believe that all children are capable of understanding and excelling in mathematics, given sufficient time and support. Our 'can-do' attitude towards mathematics encourages children to develop their fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills.

Enjoying Maths

The White Rose Maths scheme provides teachers with blocked units, allowing for greater time to explore and develop mathematical concepts. Lessons are structured to include small steps, giving children the opportunity to deepen their understanding before moving on. Children who grasp concepts quickly are further challenged through rich reasoning and problem-solving activities, rather than accelerating to new content.

Our Calculation Policy,  illustrates the various methods we use to teach the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division). These methods include the use of concrete manipulatives, pictorial representations, and abstract calculations, ensuring that children develop a strong foundation in mathematical concepts.

Developing Essential Skills

In mathematics, we use the popular online platforms TT Rockstars and Numbots to help our children develop fluency in key numeracy skills, such as times tables and number recognition. These engaging, interactive tools allow our pupils to practice and improve their mathematical abilities in a fun and engaging way.  Click on the links below to find out more information and download apps to use at home.
