Sports Premium

What is the PE and sport premium?

The primary PE and sport premium was introduced in 2013 to improve physical education and school sport in primary schools across England. In 2017 the funding was doubled to £320 million a year, and it is paid to schools by the Department for Education. The government has confirmed the funding for the 2026 to 2027 academic year.

How is the funding allocated?

Funding is based on the number of pupils in Years 1 to 6. Schools with 17 or more eligible pupils receive £6,240 plus £10 per pupil.

How can the funding be spent?

The funding is ring-fenced. This means it can only be spent on making additional and sustainable improvements to PE, sport and physical activity that benefit all our pupils and encourage healthy, active lifestyles. We use it to build the skills and confidence of our staff, so that improvements last for pupils joining the school in future years, and to develop and add to the PE, sport and activities we offer.

The premium cannot be used for building projects, for teaching the existing PE curriculum (apart from top-up swimming and water safety lessons), or for covering teachers’ planning time. It must be spent within the academic year it is given for.

How do we report on it?

Each year we publish a report showing how much funding we received, how it was spent, the impact on pupils’ participation and achievement in PE and sport, and how we will sustain these improvements. The report also shows the percentage of our Year 6 pupils who can swim at least 25 metres, use a range of strokes and perform safe self-rescue in water.
